On the 18th of October, seven of the Girl Up Meerut members visited Jyoti Niwas to carry out our first on ground activity. Jyoti Niwas is an orphanage under the ‘Missions of Charity’ congregation. In the beginning of this month, we had started an online fundraiser and we used a part of the funds raised to carry out our activity. In winters, the children in the orphanage observe a daily practice of prayer and the bare floors are too cold and uncomfortable for them so we had decided to donate supplies for the upcoming winter.

On 18th,we first met with the children of the orphanage and introduced ourselves. Then we donated 30 blankets to the children and carpets for the main hall of the orphanage. We also provided them with necessities such as rice and wheat. The smiles on the children’s faces when we handed out blankets to each of them encouraged us all to continue working towards this cause. This also made us feel that we had achieved our aim to improve their lives both emotionally and physically. In these uncertain times , many people may feel charity is an impossible and risky task but Girl Up Meerut believes that it is in these times that underprivileged lives need more of our attention and contribution therefore we hope to raise more funds for our future activities and possibly create a larger impact in our society.

A visit to an orphanage and an old age home is a life changing experience as it is filled with emotions and sentiments. Six of the GirlUp Meerut members had the great opportunity to visit two old age homes, Prem Niwas and Sri Swami Satyaanand Sevadham on 18 November ,2020. At Prem Niwas, we met around 72 people and donated winter clothes like sweaters, shawls, jackets, coats etc. We also got a chance to interact with them and learned a lot about the healthy lifestyle they maintain. At Sri Swami Satyaanand Sevadham, there were around twelve people and we donated food items to them. From our interaction with them, we gathered some knowledge about how they came to the old age home, how the pandemic had affected them and also how they adapted to this life. This visit was truly an enriching experience for each of us and it taught us to appreciate the often neglected aspects of life.

On 31st October, 2020, Girl Up Meerut organised a webinar for Sophia Girls school, Meerut. It was an honour for us to host Mr. Deek Parassini. Mr. Deek is very passionate, energetic and frank in his interactions. He has talked to thousands of people of various age groups and touched their lives with positivity. He understands the core and gives a positive solution that shifts their life to a positive direction. Mr. Deek took two sessions. First Session was for classes 11th and 12th from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and Second Session was for classes 9th and 10th from 11:45 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Mr. Deek talked about Mental Health and proved that life is all positive and negativity doesn’t exist to the 473 girls and 8 teachers who joined the webinar. The session was more of an interactive one therefore a lot of questions were also addressed during the webinar. The session became so engaging that Mr. Deek was flooded with questions and at the end almost 70 questions were still left in the chatbox. We plan to do more such webinars in future and hope that this helps us achieve our goal.
